Moxibustion therapy
Moxibustion (or "moxa") is a gentle heat therapy used in Chinese medicine to warm the body, stimulate circulation, and support overall health and vitality. It involves burning a dried herb called mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near or on specific acupuncture points to nourish and strengthen the body’s energy, known as Qi.
At Nurcha Acupuncture, moxibustion is often used alongside acupuncture, cupping, or massage, and can also be provided as a stand-alone treatment depending on your needs.
What is moxibustion used for?
Moxa is particularly beneficial for conditions that involve cold, stagnation, or deficiency. It is commonly used for people with:
Menstrual cramps and irregular cycles
Fertility support and IVF preparation
Breech babies during pregnancy
Digestive issues like bloating, diarrhoea or poor appetite
Chronic fatigue or low immunity
Cold hands and feet
Joint pain and stiffness (especially worse in cold weather)
Emotional exhaustion or burnout
It’s a deeply nourishing therapy that helps “warm the yang,” boost circulation, and support the body’s natural healing.
The Process
Indirect moxa
A moxa stick (like a cigar) is lit and held over specific acupuncture points to warm the area without touching the skin.
Cone moxa
Moxa is formed into small cones and can be used for broader warmth across areas like the lower abdomen or back.
Rice grain moxa
Tiny, rice-sized pieces of moxa are placed on specific acupuncture points or areas of the body and are lit to create warmth.
How does moxibustion affect my body?
Moxa works by:
Gently warming the meridians and internal organs
Invigorating blood and Qi flow
Dispersing cold and dampness from the body
Supporting digestion and immune function
Regulating menstruation and reproductive health
The result is a feeling of warmth, comfort, and deep relaxation—physically and emotionally.
How will I feel after moxibustion?
Many people describe feeling:
Warm and deeply relaxed
Less pain or tension
Grounded and nurtured
Energised, especially after multiple sessions
Because it strengthens the body at a deep level, moxa can have cumulative benefits over time. Aftercare is simple—keep warm, stay hydrated, and allow yourself to rest if needed.
Will moxa leave marks?
Moxibustion doesn’t usually leave marks on the skin. In rare cases, a very small, painless redness may appear if moxa is used close to the skin, but this fades quickly. You may notice a faint herbal smell during or after treatment (similar to sage or incense), which many people find comforting.
I ensure all sessions are smoke-sensitive and can offer smokeless moxa for patients with respiratory sensitivities.
